The IMDIV function returns the quotient of two complex numbers in x + yi or x + yj text format.

Syntax

=IMDIV(inumber1,inumber2)

Arguments

Argument Description
inumber1 The complex numerator or dividend
inumber2 The complex denominator or divisor

Note: Use the COMPLEX function to convert real and imaginary coefficients into a complex number.

Examples

  A B C
1 Formula Result Notes
2 =IMDIV(“-238+240i”,”10+24i”) 5+12i Quotient of the two complex numbers in the formula
3 =IMDIV(“9+3i”,6) 1.5+0.5i
4 =IMDIV(COMPLEX(5,2),COMPLEX(0,1)) 2-5i

Common Function Error(s)

Problem What went wrong
#NUM! Occurs if the supplied inumber argument is not recognized as a complex number
#NAME? Occurs when Analysis ToolPak add-in is not enabled

When dividing complex numbers a+bi by complex number c+di, the formula used is:

    \[  \text{IMDIV}(z_1,z_2) = \frac{(a+bi)}{(c+di)} = \frac{(ac+bd) + (bc-ad) i}{c^2+d^2}   \]
