The IMSUM function returns the sum of two or more complex numbers in x + yi or x + yj text format.

Syntax

=IMSUM(inumber1,[inumber2], … )

Arguments

Argument Description
inumber1,
[inumber2], …
1 to to 255 complex numbers to add. inumber1 is required, subsequent inumbers are not

Note: Use the COMPLEX function to convert real and imaginary coefficients into a complex number.

Common Function Error(s)

Problem What went wrong
#NUM! Occurs if the supplied inumber argument is not recognized as a complex number
#NAME? Occurs when Analysis ToolPak add-in is not enabled

When adding complex numbers a+bi and c+di, the calculation is as follows:    

    \[   (a+bi) + (c+di) = (a+c) + (b+d) i   \]
