Related Function:
  • NORM.S.DIST Function

The GAUSS function calculates the probability that a member of a standard normal population will fall between the mean and z standard deviations from the mean.

  • This function was introduced in Excel 2013 and so is not available in earlier versions.

Syntax

=GAUSS(z)

Arguments

Argument Description
z The real number for which you want to calculate the Gauss function value

Examples

  A B C
1 Formula Result Notes
2 =GAUSS(2) 0.47725 Probability that a member of a standard normal population will fall between the mean and 2 standard deviations from the mean
3 =GAUSS(2.5) 0.49379 Probability that a member of a standard normal population will fall between the mean and 2.5 standard deviations from the mean
4 =GAUSS(-2) -0.47725 Probability that a member of a standard normal population will fall between the mean and -2 standard deviations from the mean

Note: Because NORM.S.DIST(0,TRUE) always returns 0.5, GAUSS (z) will always be 0.5 less than NORM.S.DIST(z,TRUE).
