The NORM.S.DIST function returns the standard normal distribution of a supplied value.

  • This function was introduced in Excel 2010 and so is not available in earlier versions.
  • The NORM.S.DIST function replaces the NORMSDIST function included in earlier versions of Excel.

Syntax

=NORM.S.DIST(z,cumulative)

Arguments

Argument Description
z The value for which you want the distribution
cumulative A logical value that determines the form of the function

  TRUE Returns the cumulative distribution function
  FALSE Returns the probability mass function

The standard normal distribution is a simplified version of the normal distribution function which arises when the mean of the distribution is 0 and the standard deviation is 1.

The equation for the standard normal density function is:    

    \[    f(z) = \frac 1{ \sqrt{2\pi} } e^{- \frac {z^2}{2}}    \]
