The STANDARDIZE function returns a normalized value of a distribution, for a distribution characterized by a given mean and standard deviation.

Syntax

=STANDARDIZE(x,mean,standard_dev)

Arguments

Argument Description
x The value to be normalized
mean The arithmetic mean of the distribution
standard_dev The standard deviation of the distribution

Examples

  A B C D
1 Data
2 32
3 25
4 2
5
6 Formula Result Notes
7 =STANDARDIZE(A2,A3,A4) 3.5 Normalized value of 32, using 25 as the arithmetic mean and 2 as the standard deviation

Common Function Error(s)

Problem What went wrong
#NUM! Occurs if the supplied standard_dev argument is < 0

The equation for the normalized value is:

    \[ Z = \frac {X - \mu} \sigma \]
