There may be a panorama stitching feature in your smartphone or compact camera, but it won’t be of high quality or allow you to control the final image. Here are the top photo stitching software programs for stitching a panorama made from multiple photos. In no time at all, you’ll be able to create epic panoramic images with one of the software listed here.
There are free and paid photo stitchers available for Windows and Mac – the paid options offer more control and quality results, and usually offer a free trial.
Adobe Photoshop
- Win / Mac OS
It might be worth your while to consider Photoshop’s Photomerge option if you plan to make occasional panoramas and are already familiar with Photoshop.
Go to Automate and then Photomerge from the File menu. A new window will appear in which you can select the photos you want to stitch, the projection you want, as well as whether or not you want exposure blending and vignette removal.
Each image in your new panorama will be rendered as a separate layer in a PSD file. You can then modify your image once it is rendered as a smart object. The Content-Aware Fill feature can be used to fill in missing pixels.
Adobe Lightroom Classic
- Win / Mac OS
There is also an excellent photo stitcher built into Lightroom Classic. In most cases, it’s sufficient for stitching panoramas since it offers less control than dedicated panorama apps.
The photo editing tools you need are all right there, so no need to open another program.
You can use Lightroom Classic directly with Raw files. You can also create HDR panoramas and fill in missing pixels with the content-aware fill option.
Panorama Studio
- Win / Mac OS
In addition to its photo stitching, what really makes this application shine is its interactive tools. Using an interactive panorama, viewers can explore worlds within worlds, exploring the details of a scene and beyond.
Panorama Studio’s editing tools allow you to change the focal length, align images, blend them, and adjust exposure. Additionally, you can add contrast, adjust curves/levels/color, and sharpen with or without masks.
PTGUI Pro
- Win / Mac OS / Linux
The PTGui photo stitching software is fast, easy to use, produces excellent results, and can stitch a gigapixel panorama in just 25 seconds. A panorama can be rendered in less time than it would take many programs to save the same image.
In addition to being the fastest photo stitching software, PTGui also provides the most extensive user control, barring maybe Hugin. PTGui’s user interface, however, is quite polished compared to Hugin’s.
In three or four clicks, you can load images, set control points, and create a panoramic image using PTGui’s app wizard. It comes with a number of automatic features and even has a drag-and-drop feature that makes it especially easy to use for beginners.
Hugin
- Win / Mac OS / Linux
Among the free panorama stitching software available, Hugin is the best if you don’t mind a bit of hands-on involvement.
There is an automatic alignment option as well as a manual option in the panorama maker. The software can do some pretty heavy lifting when it comes to stitching panoramas manually, but you will need to add control points before it will stitch the photos together.
The software excels at blending photos taken at different angles or with different cameras. The stitching process can also correct distortions in the source images. It even has its own lens database and allows you to change the projection and field of view.
Panoweaver
- Win / Mac OS
This photo stitching software is part of EasyPano’s virtual software family: Panoweaver 10, Tourweaver 7, and VRTourMaker 1. Since virtual reality is a big part of its focus, it stands out in this list.
A high degree of automation is built into Panoweaver 10, so the user has as little input as possible. Of course, you can fine-tune the adjustments to suit your needs, but if you prefer a hands-off approach, simply upload the photos, select the image type, and click stitch. All you have to do is crop, save, and you’re done.
You can also explore tutorials to learn more about this feature-rich stitching software if you are interested in moving beyond the automated processes.
GigaPan Stitch
- Win / Mac OS
Although designed primarily for Gigapan panoramas, Gigapan Stitch can also stitch standard panoramas.
In addition to being included with any Gigapan robot purchase, this system is designed to seamlessly integrate with all Gigapan camera equipment and the company’s online community.
This might be all you need if all you’re doing is creating panoramic images with the Gigapan Epic. However, Gigapan Stitch hasn’t been updated in a while and is falling behind other photo stitching software.
Panorama Stitcher
- Mac OS X
A great choice for Mac users looking for fast, powerful, and easy-to-use panorama stitching software is Panorama Stitcher.
You probably already know that it’s not always possible to render an end result that’s completely artifact-free when performing photo stitching. Artifacts and ghosting are automatically removed with Panorama Stitcher – you do not have to do anything.
PhotoStitcher
- Win / Mac OS
A key feature of PhotoStitcher is that it is completely non-technical. Without any input from the user, it can create full-view panoramas. The software stitches panorama shots together in one click, similar to Panorama Stitcher.
A single, perfectly aligned panorama can be created even by combining images from different shooting angles, resolutions, and perspectives. Among its nicer features are Auto Complete, accelerated stitching on multiple-core machines, and multi-row panorama creation.
Image Composite Editor
- Win
Windows users will find Microsoft’s Image Composite Editor (ICE) to be the best free photo stitching software around. The interface wasn’t particularly user-friendly until recently, but its most recent update (2.0) improved it greatly. A step-by-step guide is now available in the app to guide you through the process of creating panoramas.
Among the notable features is autocomplete, which fills in the missing pixels around completed shapes. It is also possible to create panoramas from still images taken from video (e.g. panning).
A variety of panorama types are supported, including spherical, cylindrical, stereographic, Mercator, planar, and orthographic panoramas. Images saved in JPEG format, TIFF format, PSD/PSB format, and tiled format can be exported as panoramic images.
