Lee

Douglas Southall Freeman’s Pulitzer Prize–winning biography of Robert E. Lee was greeted with critical acclaim when it was first published in 1935. Stephen Vincent Benét said “There is a monument—and a fine one—to Robert E. Lee at Lexington.

But this one, I think, will last as long.” This reissue of Richard Harwell’s abridgment fulfills Benét’s prophecy, chronicling all the major aspects and highlights of the general’s military career, from his stunning accomplishments in the Mexican War to the humbling surrender at Appomattox.

More than just a military leader, Lee embodied all the conflicts of his time. The son of a Revolutionary War hero and related by marriage to George Washington, he was the product of young America’s elite. When Abraham Lincoln offered him command of the United States Army, however, he choose to lead the confederate ranks, convinced that his first loyalty lay with his native Virginia.

Although a member of the planter class, he felt that slavery was “a moral and political evil.” Aloof and somber, he nevertheless continually inspired his men with his deep concern for their personal welfare. Freeman’s achievement is the full portrait of a great American—a distinguished, scholarly, yet eminently readable classic that has linked Freeman to Lee as irrevocably as Boswell to Dr. Johnson.

I wish to live under no other government, and there is no sacrifice I am not ready to make for the preservation of the Union save that of honour. If a disruption takes place, I shall go back in sorrow to my people and share the misery of my native State, and save in her defense there will be one soldier less in the world than now.

Disclaimer: This is my review of Douglas Freeman’s book and should not be construed as a rating of the man, Robert E. Lee. Written with a very pro-Southern slant which I cannot support but read for a better understanding of the history.

Lee is a monumental biography that delves into the life and character of General Robert E. Lee, one of the most iconic figures in American history. Freeman’s work is widely regarded as a masterpiece of historical writing and for good reason.

One of the book’s greatest strengths is Freeman’s extensive research and attention to detail. He meticulously explores every aspect of Lee’s life, from his upbringing and military career to his personal relationships and inner struggles. The depth of information provided allows readers to develop a comprehensive understanding of Lee as a person, a leader, and a product of his time.

Freeman’s writing style is eloquent and engaging, making the biography accessible and compelling. He presents a balanced view of Lee, neither idolizing nor vilifying him, but instead offering a nuanced portrait of a complex and flawed individual. The book also provides valuable insights into the Civil War era, shedding light on the political and social dynamics that shaped Lee’s decisions and actions.

However, Lee is not without its flaws. At over 800 pages, it can be overwhelming for some readers, especially those with a limited interest in the Civil War or historical biographies. Additionally, Freeman’s admiration for his subject occasionally leads to a somewhat uncritical portrayal of Lee, with minimal exploration of the controversies surrounding him.

There is bias in this book and it’s important to understand that the author’s father had fought for the Confederacy (the original 4-volume series was published in 1934). That said, this book does give great insight into both the character of Robert E. Lee and the intense struggles of the Confederacy during the civil war.

Despite these minor shortcomings, Lee remains an essential read for anyone seeking a comprehensive understanding of Robert E. Lee and the Civil War. Freeman’s exhaustive research and thoughtful analysis make this biography an enduring classic in the field of historical literature.
