As avid travelers, we’ve always been fascinated by the rich history and stunning landscapes of Greece. During our recent Greek Island Cruise, we were able to squeeze in a one-day visit to the beautiful island of Rhodes. While we were aware that a single day wouldn’t be enough to explore everything this enchanting island has to offer, we managed to craft a whirlwind itinerary that allowed us to experience some of the most iconic sights and flavors of Rhodes.

Lindos

Our day began early, with a drive to the charming village of Lindos, located on the southeastern coast of Rhodes. The picturesque whitewashed buildings, narrow streets, and traditional tavernas made us feel as though we had stepped back in time. We wandered through the village, taking in the sights and sounds, before making our way to the Acropolis of Lindos, which sits atop a rocky cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea. The stunning views from this vantage point were well worth the climb, and we were able to admire the ancient temple ruins and the historic fortress walls that once protected the village from invaders.

Authentic Greek Lunch

Feeling a bit hungry after our morning excursion, we ventured back to the village in search of an authentic Greek lunch. We stumbled upon a small family-owned taverna tucked away in a quiet alley, where we enjoyed a delicious meal of grilled octopus, stuffed vine leaves, and Greek salad. The warm hospitality and mouth-watering cuisine made us feel right at home, and we couldn’t help but indulge in a second helping of the famous baklava for dessert.

Kamiros

After lunch, we hopped back on our bus and made our way to the ancient city of Kamiros, located on the northwestern coast of Rhodes. Monte Smith Hill & The Acropolis of Rhodes is a well-preserved archaeological site offers a glimpse into the daily life of ancient Rhodians, with remnants of houses, public buildings, and an agora dating back to the 5th century BC. Unfortunately, we had no time to stop and explore the ruins or learn about the history of this once-thriving city, we will save that for our next trip.

Rhodes Old Town – A Medieval Masterpiece

As night fell, we ventured into the heart of Rhodes Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that boasts an impressive collection of medieval architecture. The winding cobblestone streets, imposing fortress walls, and historic buildings transported us back to the era of the Knights of St. John, who ruled Rhodes for over two centuries, and the Palace of the Grand Master. We spent the evening exploring the charming shops, cafes, and restaurants that line the streets of the Old Town, soaking up the vibrant atmosphere and savoring the flavors of Greek cuisine.

In Conclusion

While a single day in Rhodes is undoubtedly not enough to fully experience all that this enchanting island has to offer, our whirlwind tour allowed us to immerse ourselves in the rich history, stunning landscapes, and authentic flavors of this Greek gem. We left Rhodes with a newfound appreciation for its unique blend of ancient and medieval history, and we can’t wait to return someday to explore even more of its hidden treasures.
