The Venetian Harbor, with its iconic lighthouse standing proudly at its entrance, became a favorite spot for an evening stroll. We watched the fishing boats bob gently in the water, their lights reflecting on the calm surface, while the vibrant buzz of waterfront restaurants filled the air. We sampled local specialties like dakos, kalitsounia, and, of course, drank copious amounts of raki, always offered with a warm smile. Agia Triada Monastery
Seeking a taste of Crete’s spiritual side and a journey into its beautiful countryside, we embarked on a trip to the Agia Triada Monastery. Located on the Akrotiri peninsula, just a short drive from Chania, this impressive monastery is a testament to Venetian architecture and Orthodox tradition. As we approached, the grand, imposing facade, framed by lush olive groves, took our breath away. Inside, we explored the serene courtyards, admired the intricate stonework, and visited the main church, feeling a profound sense of peace and history. It’s still a functioning monastery, and we were fascinated to learn about the monks’ lives and their commitment to producing their own wine and olive oil. We even purchased a bottle of their robust, flavorful olive oil – a perfect souvenir of our visit. The quiet dignity of the place, combined with its stunning setting, made for a truly reflective and enriching experience.
Ancient Aptera
For a deeper dive into Crete’s ancient past, we ventured inland to the archaeological site of Ancient Aptera. Perched dramatically on a plateau overlooking Souda Bay, the views alone were worth the drive. We were eager to learn more about this staple of the Cretan diet and its immense cultural significance, so we took a tour at an organic Cretan olive farm. It was an incredibly insightful and delicious experience! We walked among ancient olive trees, some centuries old, and learned about the meticulous process of cultivating olives and pressing the oil. Our guide explained the different varieties of olives, the techniques for harvesting, and the strict standards for organic certification. The highlight, of course, was the tasting session. We sampled various grades of extra virgin olive oil, learning to identify the subtle aromas and peppery notes that distinguish high-quality oil. We developed a whole new appreciation for the effort and passion that goes into every bottle. It truly made us realize why Cretan olive oil is celebrated worldwide for its flavor and health benefits.

These pristine natural wonders are truly breathtaking and offer a perfect contrast to the historical sites. For the more adventurous among you, the Samaria Gorge, one of Europe’s longest canyons, presented an irresistible challenge.
