About Van Gogh
Even though Vincent van Gogh‘s brilliance was short-lived, he remains one of the most influential artists in Western art history. Van Gogh’s artwork was passed to his younger brother Theo after he committed suicide in 1890. In the wake of Theo’s sudden death, Jo van Gogh-Bonger became increasingly involved in spreading awareness of Vincent’s artworks.
It was Jo van Gogh-Bonger’s son, Vincent Willem van Gogh, who founded the Van Gogh Foundation, and the Netherlands built the Van Gogh Museum next to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam in 1973.
Ticket sales for the museum reached 2.26 million in 2017, so book well in advance to avoid long lines.
What You’ll See
Upon entering the museum, you will see dozens of self-portraits painted by Van Gogh to practice his painting skills. His landscapes portray scenes from the countryside, forests, and farms that demonstrate his love of nature. His still-life paintings of flowers, including the iconic Sunflower, are also featured. You won’t want to miss Almond Blossom, The Potato Eaters, and The Bedroom.
Along with his works, you’ll also see pieces by his contemporaries in France, including Signac and Pissarro, to get a feel for the Post-Impressionist movement. Also on display are his own letters, drawings, and French and Japanese prints he collected over the years.
