From Aegean Blues to Cappadocian Hues

Our Grand Finale in Turkey

Our Greek Islands adventure was drawing to a close, but little did we know, the best was yet to come. After days filled with ancient ruins, sun-drenched beaches, and delicious Mediterranean cuisine, we embarked on the final leg of our journey: a captivating extension to Cappadocia, Turkey. It was a stark contrast to the whitewashed villages of the Cyclades, but every bit as magical.

Landing in a Moonscape

Stepping off the plane in Kayseri, we immediately felt a shift in atmosphere. The air was dry and crisp, a welcome change after the humid island breezes. As we drove towards our hotel in Göreme, the landscape began to transform. Gone were the olive groves and turquoise waters, replaced by an otherworldly terrain of towering rock formations, affectionately known as “fairy chimneys.” It felt like we had landed on the moon!

Our Cave Hotel Experience

One of the most unique aspects of Cappadocia is the opportunity to stay in a cave hotel. We had booked a charming room carved directly into the rock, complete with modern amenities but retaining an authentic, cozy feel.

The evenings were cool, and sipping tea on our private terrace, gazing out at the illuminated rock formations, was an unforgettable experience.

Hot Air Balloons at Sunrise

The absolute highlight of our Cappadocia trip was, without a doubt, the hot air balloon ride. We woke before dawn, full of anticipation, and joined a small group for the short drive to the launch site. As the sun began to peek over the horizon, painting the sky in fiery hues, dozens of balloons ignited and slowly began to ascend.

From thousands of feet up, the landscape stretched out beneath us like a vast, sculpted canvas. The fairy chimneys looked like tiny fantastical cities, and the other balloons floating around us added to the dreamlike quality. It was a moment of pure awe and wonder that we’ll cherish forever.

Exploring the Valleys and Underground Cities

Beyond the balloon ride, Cappadocia offered so much more to explore. We spent our days hiking through the Red and Rose Valleys, marveling at the intricate rock formations and ancient cave dwellings. We also ventured into one of the region’s famous underground cities, Derinkuyu.

It was incredible to imagine entire communities living beneath the earth, complete with churches, stables, and ventilation shafts. The ingenuity of ancient civilizations never ceases to amaze us!

A Fitting End to an Epic Journey

Leaving Cappadocia, we felt a mix of exhilaration and melancholy. It was the perfect grand finale to our Greek Islands cruise and tour, offering a completely different but equally enriching cultural experience. From the vibrant blues of the Aegean to the earthy hues of Cappadocia, our journey was a tapestry of unforgettable moments, proving that sometimes, the best surprises are saved for last.
