A Grand Entrance Like No Other
From the moment we pulled up to the front entrance in Tsim Sha Tsui, we knew we weren’t just at a hotel—we were stepping into a piece of history. The signature Brewster Green Rolls-Royces lined up out front exude a sense of arrival.
As we walked through the doors, greeted by the famous pageboys in their crisp white uniforms, the buzz of the city seemed to melt away. The lobby is exactly as opulent as you’d imagine, with high gilded ceilings and a sense of timelessness that’s hard to find in the modern skyscrapers of the city.
The Afternoon Tea Ritual
You can’t stay at “The Peninsula” without joining the queue for their world-famous Afternoon Tea. Even if you aren’t staying overnight, this is the quintessential Hong Kong experience. We spent a dreamy afternoon tucked into a corner of the lobby, listening to the live string quartet while snacking on warm scones with clotted cream and delicate finger sandwiches.
It’s definitely a “see and be seen” kind of place, and the atmosphere is surprisingly welcoming. Pro tip: If you’re staying at the hotel, you can skip the massive line that usually snakes through the lobby—perks of the guest life!
Old-School Charm Meets High-Tech Comfort
We were half-expecting the rooms to feel a bit “museum-like” given the hotel opened in 1928, but we were totally wrong. Our room was the perfect blend of classic elegance and surprisingly high-tech features. Everything—from the lights and temperature to the TV and even the “Do Not Disturb” sign—is controlled by integrated tablets found throughout the suite.
But let’s be real: the star of the show was the view. Waking up to the floor-to-ceiling vista of Victoria Harbour and the Hong Kong Island skyline is a memory we’ll be replaying in our heads for years. We may or may not have spent an hour just sitting by the window with our morning coffee watching the Star Ferry cross the water.
A Dip in the Roman Empire
One of our favorite surprises was the swimming pool. Designed to look like a Roman bath, it features massive columns, statues, and an incredible outdoor terrace. We took a sunset dip and felt like we’d been transported back to ancient Italy, all while looking out at the neon lights of the city. It’s easily one of the most Instagrammable spots in the building.
Dining in the Clouds
While the hotel has several world-class restaurants (including the Michelin-starred Gaddi’s), we found ourselves drawn to Felix on the top floor. Designed by Philippe Starck, it’s edgy, modern, and offers some of the best cocktails in town. We wrapped up our night there, sipping on artisan gins while watching the “Symphony of Lights” show across the water.
Why We’ll Be Back
The Peninsula isn’t just a place to sleep; it’s an experience that makes you feel like you’re part of Hong Kong’s narrative. Yes, it’s a splurge, but for the level of service and that unmistakable “Gold Age” vibe, it’s worth every penny. Whether you’re celebrating a big milestone or just want to treat yourself to the best, we can’t recommend it enough.
