“Some waters you just have to wade through, no matter how cold they get, because turning back means standing still forever.”

Sun, Sand, and Serious Trouble

If you know anything about my reading habits, you know that my reading habits are very eclectic—so whenever I’m just desperately wishing I was sitting on a dock with a cold drink—I immediately reach for a sun-soaked, action-packed thriller.

A buddy of mine kept telling me to check out Mac Fortner’s work. So last weekend, I finally cracked open Knee Deep.

Let me tell you: once I started, I put all my other readings aside until I finished. If you’re into salty coastal breezes, gritty antiheroes, and plots that move faster than a cigarette boat running from the Coast Guard, you’re in for a treat.

Here is my honest, spoiler-free review of Knee Deep.

What’s the Story?

Without spoiling the best twists, Knee Deep pulls us into a world that feels both idyllic and dangerous. The story centers around a protagonist who would much rather just live the quiet life, drink a beer in peace, and keep his nose out of trouble.

Naturally, trouble has a GPS tracker locked right onto him.

Before he knows it, our lead is tangled up in a web of shady characters, high-stakes crime, and problems that can’t be solved with a simple polite conversation. What starts as a seemingly small complication spirals rapidly into a full-blown survival situation. To get out alive, he has to dust off a very specific set of skills he’d rather keep buried.

What I Loved

1. The Setting Feels Like a Real Place

I’m a sucker for atmosphere, and Fortner nails the coastal noir aesthetic. You can practically smell the saltwater, feel the humidity sticking to your skin, and taste the lime in your beer. The marina culture, the dive bars, and the sun-bleached docks aren’t just backdrops—they feel alive.

2. A Protagonist You Actually Want to Root For

There’s a fine line between a cool, capable action lead and an obnoxious, invincible macho caricature. Fortner keeps his hero grounded. He’s tough, smart, and quick on his feet, but he also takes his licks, makes miscalculations, and has a genuinely funny, cynical internal monologue that kept me grinning.

3. Pacing That Doesn’t Let You Breathe

I planned to read three chapters before bed. Cut to 1:30 AM, and I was bargaining with myself: “Just one more chapter, then I’ll sleep.” Fortner understands how to build momentum. The tension ratchets up steadily until the final act, where the payoff hits like a freight train.

What Could Have Been Better

Look, I loved it, but let’s be fair. If you’re looking for high-brow literary prose that redefines the English language, this isn’t that book.

A few of the supporting characters lean slightly into familiar genre archetypes—the ruthless boss, the loyal buddy, the shadowy antagonist. That said, even when a plot beat felt slightly predictable, Fortner’s execution was so punchy that I honestly didn’t care. It’s built for entertainment, and it delivers.

Who Should Read Knee Deep?

I’d recommend this book in a heartbeat to anyone who loves:

  • Florida / Gulf Coast Crime Fiction (think John D. MacDonald, Wayne Stinnett, or Randy Wayne White)
  • Reluctant hero tropes where a peaceful guy is pushed way too far
  • Fast-paced weekend reads that feel like an 80s or 90s action movie in paperback form

My Final Verdict

Rating: 4.0 / 5 Cold Coronas 🍺

Knee Deep by Mac Fortner is lean, mean, and insanely fun. It’s the ultimate beach read—especially if your idea of relaxing includes car chases, boat escapes, and righteous payback. Grab a copy, clear your afternoon, and enjoy the ride.
